Reading and Discussion: “Vom Arbeiterkind zur Professeur”
Social mobility is low in higher education. Even the number of students whose parents did not go to university is very small. It is even more difficult to find “workers’ children” further along the academic career path. In the book presented at this event, professors from various disciplines describe their personal educational careers. What does it mean to them to have achieved a professorship? How do they experience the university and the promise of equal opportunities? And how have their own experiences of advancement shaped them as academics?
Participants are invited to listen to these biographical notes and to engage in conversation about social background as a dimension of inequality.
