Research Programme
The circadian clock regulates physiology and behavior according to the time of day. Modern lifestyles can disrupt this system, contributing to sleep disorders, psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic and cardiovascular conditions, immune dysfunction, and cancer.
Circadian medicine studies these links and aims to improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. A joint consortium of Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the University of Lübeck will develop new diagnostic tools, restore disrupted rhythms, and adapt treatments to the body’s internal timing.
The research focuses on circadian immunology, energy metabolism, and neuropsychiatry. In the long term, the internal clock should become an important factor in personalized treatment, disease prevention, and health promotion.
