At a time when equality work and feminist achievements in Saxony-Anhalt are increasingly being questioned, this lecture series aims to make motherhood visible as a socio-political and democratic space of experience. Discourses on motherhood shape understandings of family, gender, work and care, and therefore also influence the foundations of democratic coexistence.
The series understands motherhood as a space of responsibility, relational ethics and solidarity, while also recognising it as a site of political struggle. Questions such as who is considered a “good mother”, who is allowed to be a mother, and whose care work receives social recognition are placed at the centre of discussion. Scholars, activists and cultural practitioners are invited to develop new narratives of motherhood beyond conservative or anti-feminist framings and to open spaces for feminist democratic education.
The first lecture focuses on the concept of “Matreszenz | Muttertät”, approaching motherhood not merely as a biographical event but as a profound psychological, physical and social transformation process. Hanna Meyer and Prof. Dr Svenja Krämer examine the changes and challenges that can emerge across different areas of life during the transition to becoming a mother, considering both individual experiences and structural conditions.
