The DFG recognises that research careers often intersect with major life events — such as parental leave, caregiving duties, or long-term illness.
To enhance equality and diversity in science, the DFG offers a range of support and compensation measures when family- or care-related absences occur. Under the funding guidelines, researchers and project leaders may request adjustments such as cost-neutral project extensions, part-time work, temporary relief staff or even project suspension when a team member is absent for family reasons. These provisions help ensure that academic careers remain viable and inclusive, even during challenging personal circumstances, thereby supporting a fair and diverse research landscape.
