Good science is diverse science! The diversity of society must be reflected at all levels of knowledge production and the scientific community. A society therefore cannot and should not afford to discriminate against and exclude highly qualified carers. Nevertheless, parents and carers in particular experience many forms of discrimination. Only if these are made visible can discrimination be counteracted in the long term.

The pilot study ‘Discrimination-critical funding & calls for applications’ addresses the question: What tendencies of discrimination against parents and unpaid carers can currently be identified in the third-party funding sector in the German scientific community?

To date, there has been hardly any research into this area of discrimination in the academic world, although the acquisition of third-party funding has become a key factor in the success of an academic career. However, this research is urgently needed, as there are fears that an entire generation of academics and their knowledge will be lost as a result of the corona gap.

The findings of the study and the resulting guidelines for funding providers will be presented at the event ‘Care and (Un)Fair? Discrimination against parents in research funding programmes’ at the Seminarzentrum of Freie Universität Berlin in cooperation with the Magherita-von-Brentano-Zentrum, followed by a panel discussion with experts. Participation in the event will also be possible online.
