Un/simultaneities: Gender Equality and Sexism in STEM Subjects
Un/simultaneities: Gender Equality and Sexism in STEM Subjects – Perspectives and Challenges
Statistical data on gender distribution in the subject groups has shown a similar picture for years: women are underrepresented in the STEM subjects. This applies to engineering and computer science from the very first semester at university. But even in maths and natural sciences, where the ratio among students is more balanced, the ‘gap’ widens as the academic qualification levels progress – the gender proportions drift apart at the level of academic staff. Men are then overrepresented.
How is this gender imbalance in STEM experienced in practice? Where do students and academics face gender-specific barriers? To what extent do particular hurdles arise from the interaction of gender and STEM subject cultures and epistemologies?
This event is aimed at students, academics, representatives and anyone interested in gender equality in the STEM sector. We particularly welcome contributions from people who would like to share their perspectives and report on their experiences. We would like to respond specifically to your questions and learn from each other’s empowerment strategies.
