Gender equality, anti-discrimination, and the protection of minorities are cornerstones of a democratic and open university. However, these fundamental principles are increasingly coming under political and ideological pressure: gender studies, post-colonial studies and black studies are being publicly delegitimised; the rights of TIN* individuals are being openly questioned. Such attacks not only threaten individual disciplines or groups of people – they are an attack on academic freedom and fundamental democratic values.
This year’s annual conference of the Federal Conference of Women’s and Equal Opportunities Officers at Universities (bukof) is therefore entitled ‘Gender Democracy.’ Workshops, open spaces, and a dialogue discussion will address topics such as anti-feminism and the threat to democracy, gender diversity in equality policy, negotiations on diversity and equality, and (anti)democratic structures at universities. The focus will be on how universities can secure, expand, and be spaces for equality and anti-discrimination. At a time when democratic achievements are being called into question, clear positions, solidarity-based alliances and new alliances are needed.
