Bias can occur in appointment procedures which can influence and distort the outcome. This training on bias in appointment procedures focuses on gender bias and is aimed at members of appointment committees. It is a collaborative project between Technische Universität Berlin and Berlin University of the Arts and is funded by the Berlin Senate’s program for the promotion of equal opportunities for women in research and teaching and the Einstein Foundation Berlin.
How the training works: You will follow an appointment committee during an appointment procedure. In situations where bias could occur, the discussion is paused. You’ll have three options for how to respond. This is followed by an explanatory video based on your decision.
The training lasts around 40-60 minutes and consists of 9 animated scenes, which you can watch either in German or English.
Notes:
- The scenes show the work of the committee. Bias can also occur before or after the appointment procedure (e.g. in the call for applications or in contract negotiations), but these are not discussed here.
- The term FLINTA* (females, lesbians, intersex, non-binary, trans and agender people) is used in the training to represent gender diversity.
- The focus of the Unconscious Bias Training is on gender bias. People are also marginalized and discriminated against on the basis of categories such as ethnicity, age, class, and health. These categories of discrimination can overlap (intersectionality).
- Appointment committees bring together people with varying interests. This can lead to the deliberate manipulation of the process. The Unconscious Bias Training primarily focuses on unconscious processes with the aim of encouraging self-reflection and raising awareness of bias.
