Sex- and gender-based studies and analyses are crucial for expanding our knowledge and understanding of health and disease and enhancing the scientific quality of results.

This award aims to promote sex and gender issues in translational research and increase visibility for these topics. It recognises research excellence among scientists working in the field of biomedicine who can show how accounting for sex and gender in translational research improves their research project and makes the outcomes and results more useful. With the award, BIH funds two projects in the field of translational research that make a contribution through a special focus on sex and gender aspects within the research project.

The prize is awarded for a joint research project of the applicant with cooperation partners at BIH. It is open for research projects within the field of translational medicine, in which sex and gender aspects are considered carefully throughout the research project, e.g. derivation of the research question, choice of study design and setting as well as the analysis and for the interpretation of the results.
