Solidarity is an important component of democratic societies. Allyship is a way of being in solidarity: People use their privileges for marginalized people, even though they’re not affected themselves. The concept of allyship can be used to (further) develop an intersectionally oriented equality policy. Looking at one’s own privileges thereby also leads to a critique of power and hierarchies.
At this year’s annual conference, we would like to discuss the concept of allyship from a gender policy perspective as well as reflect on bukof’s own political practice. What constitutes “allyship”? How do gender equality actors deal with expectations regarding allyship? What conditions, opportunities, challenges and uncertainties does being “ally” entail? What does the concept mean inside and outside of gender equality policy contexts?
