The research project “WIM – Women Scientists in the Media” analyses the underrepresentation of women scientists in science reporting and (digital) science communication. Based on this, sustainable action strategies and support systems are being developed that lead to a successful increase in the presence of female scientists in both areas.

This talk will present insights into the diverse findings of the project, particularly with regard to the conditions for and effects of the visibility of female scientists in the media.
The focus will be on the interdependencies between the activities in social and traditional media and the different perspectives and prioritisations of female scientists and media professionals. Based on multi-method analyses of presence, motivations, narratives and contact initiation, strategies by and for female scientists to increase their own visibility are presented and discussed.
