This online seminar provides an overview of the legal foundations and challenges relating to the balance of work and family in research careers. The seminar will give an introduction to the foundations of maternity leave and parental leave (Mutterschutz and Elternzeit) and will give special attention to circumstances specific to working in academia. The consequences of taking time off due to family obligations and working part time on limited contracts will be addressed, as well as temporary civil service (Beamtenverhältnisse). The possibility and right to extend these contracts will be explained. Other topics include how to handle family-related questions at job interviews, applications for professorships, and an explanation of further family-related legal protections.
