The lecture series “Diversity creates science – science creates diversity. Social challenges from the perspective of gender and diversity research in STEM” presents critical and reflective analyses of gender and diversity research in STEM, shows perspectives for a science of diversity and uses numerous examples to illustrate that the STEM subjects are not “cultures of no culture”, for example sciences free of historical and socio-cultural aspects.

What are the consequences for the self-images of the disciplines in STEM, their scientific communities and their specialised cultures? What does this mean for the generation of scientific knowledge, its communication to and with society and the diverse applications of knowledge? The lecture series is dedicated to these and other questions, and the lectures are organised around three main topics:

  • Diversity of STEM in terms of diversity of scientific communities, specialised cultures and education;
  • Diversity of knowledge in STEM with regard to its generation and canonisation, taking into account current debates on research desiderata and marginalised knowledge;
  • Diversity of knowledge in the course of transfer processes between science and society in science communication and the integration of technologies into everyday life.
