Service orientation is a promising architectural concept for quickly and cost-efficiently coupling encapsulated software components (“services”) and adapting them to new requirements. Today, medicine is particularly struggling with the need to connect and integrate heterogeneous IT systems. In this situation, SOAMED starts out with the idea of underpinning the current pragmatically focussed service-oriented approach with theoretical foundations by integrating established as well as emerging software engineering procedures.
