More and more people are having to find a balance between their career and care obligations towards family members. It’s becoming more and more clear to employers that this is a topic they have to pay attention to if they want to hold on to their employees and ensure they aren’t overworked. According to official statistics from insurance companies, around 3.7 million people in Germany are in need of nursing care. More than two thirds of them are cared for at home by relatives, friends, or neighbours. And half of those people have jobs.
This acts a double burden and comes as at a price: According to the Robert Koch Institute, relatives who take on care work report reduced feelings of well-being compared to people who don’t have any care obligations. They mention increased stress and mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. These are factors that also have an effect on their professional and family life.
This training course is targeted towards employees at institutions of higher education that want to learn more about the topic of caring for relatives. As guides, they’ll be sensitised to the topic and empowered to act as a point of contact for employees and students who might benefit from concrete offers for support in the region.
