For decades, scholars and activists have been trying to implement gender-fair language guidelines. In the meantime, a multitude of different forms, ways of speaking and writing exist beyond the “generic masculine” and are sometimes met with fierce resistance, which sees language as an untouchable and unchangeable cultural asset.

However, language does not simply depict reality, but also plays a part in constructing it and shaping our perception. It is thus also an instrument of power and exclusion. It is subject to (social) change and participates in it. Gender-fair and discrimination-sensitive language therefore makes an active contribution to equal rights for all genders.
