Female Researchers and the Path to Professorship
The first important milestone for female researchers who want to become professors is the qualification phase, in which they work as a “wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin”, junior professor, or as a stand-in for a professor. In addition to purely academic work, networking is an essential part of this phase.
In the second stage – the application phase – portraying yourself convincingly and professionally is key. Clearly positioning yourself is an absolute must.
For researchers that are offered a professorship, the third stage involves contract negotiations about salary and setup. Those who are most successful in this stage have sufficient information and knowledge about the psychology of negotiation and go into it with a clever strategy. Acting empathetically with budget-minded actors and aloof “patriarchs” is a real challenge. Special funding programmes, issues of work/life and work/family balance, and “dual career” constellations are also relevant topics.
