The Corona crisis is fuelling existing social inequalities, including gender inequality. At the same time, these inequalities are once again coming more into the public eye. Increased media attention is being devoted to activities and professions that are considered “system relevant” but tend to be paid below average and have a high proportion of women. It has quickly become apparent that working mothers are under particular pressure to reconcile their jobs and care work, due to home schooling and reduced daycare.
What is the situation like for academics working in higher education? Online teaching, virtual supervision of students and conference attendance, spending time on career-enhancing research and then, for many, the added burden of childcare. In this lecture various gaps, e.g. in the distribution of care responsibilities, will be sketched out and discussed with regard to their consequences.
