Women in Leadership Positions

There’s often a lot of talk about the percentage of women filling professorships, but what about gender parity in leadership positions at institutions of higher education? This study takes a look at the number of top-ranking positions occupied by women at universities, technical schools, and other institutions.

As always, there’s good news and there’s bad news. In the last 20 years, the number of women in leadership positions in higher education tripled. In 2017/2018, almost 30% of these positions overall were occupied by women, and the same was true of 21% of rector and president positions. However, there’s still work to be done in other areas. Only 18% of department and faculty leadership positions were held by women.

The study is carried out by the Kompetenzzentrum Frauen in Wissenschaft und Forschung CEWS. The original study can be viewed here, and a summary of the results on which this post is based can be viewed here.
